Contributed Oral "Chalk Talks"
Traditional MUACC "chalk talks" encouraged presenters to describe ideas clearly and succinctly without the distraction of details. Significance of ideas could be clearly articulated along with associated hurdles so the audience could publicly or privately offer encouragement and advice. Because some modern concepts do not lend themselves to a chalk presentation, the organizers will provide a laptop PC to enable presentations with a few PowerPoint-style slides. (If you need to use a Mac, please bring your own with necessary cables. We recommend testing the connections well in advance.)
Recent Assistant Professors might want to focus on what they plan to accomplish in their research, describe their teaching plans, or describe key teaching or research innovations they are considering, rather than a comprehensive survey of future plans. This approach can convey their excitement while informing the audience and inviting suggestions.
General MUACC Presentation Guide
- The purpose of MUACC is to present big picture problems and solicit collegial suggestions for approaching those problems. It is not for presenting completed research.
- Assistant professors are encouraged to outline their research, teaching, and service plans, especially while their programs are nascent.
- In all cases, the presentation goal should be to convince the assembled Analytical Chemists that the work is exciting, important, and advances measurement science.
- Chalk talks prevent drowning a general audience in data and allow one to highlight essential themes and the significance of the work.
- Because some modern technologies can not be efficiently presented using just chalk, a few PowerPoint or similar slides, videos, etc. may be included as supporting information or in place of the chalk.
- Most hosts will provide a PC onto which presentations should be placed before a session starts. Mac users should bring appropriate adapters and test their setup prior to the session in which they speak to avoid wasting time on interface problems.
In the future, a Summary Program will be available Schedule page.
